The MOOF Kikapu Ecosystems and Social Restoration Initiative- Kenya.
Requested Support: $118,000- 200,000 USD: DONATION
Introduction
Across the Mt. Kenya region in Kenya, smallholder farmers and vulnerable families are struggling with degraded soils, declining harvests, poverty, malnutrition and the growing threat of climate change. But there is hope.
The Project
The MOOF Kikapu Ecosystems and Social Restoration Initiative is a flagship program of MOOF-Africa, designed to restore degraded ecosystems, strengthen rural community resilience, develop rural economies, and create sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers and vulnerable households in the Mt. Kenya region and beyond. The initiative combines regenerative agriculture, social enterprise, and environmental stewardship to ensure that both people and nature thrive in harmony.
At the heart of the initiative is the “Kikapu” (basket) model – a holistic livelihood basket that integrates food, nutrition, income, and ecosystem services. Each Kikapu represents a diversified portfolio of regenerative enterprises that not only provide immediate household needs but also build long-term ecological and social sustainability.
Core Objectives
- Ecosystem Restoration – rehabilitating degraded landscapes and smallholder farms, conserving water sources, and re-establishing agroforestry systems.
- Regenerative Agriculture – supporting farmers to transition from conventional methods to climate-smart and regenerative organic farming practices.
- Food and Nutrition Security – ensuring families can access healthy, nutritious, safe, low cost, diverse, and sufficient food through their own farms and engage in community cooperative agricultural enterprises.
- Livelihood Empowerment – creating income generating opportunities through value addition, community cooperatives, and fresh fruits and vegetables enterprises.
- Social Restoration – strengthening social cohesion, women and youth, gender equity, and intergenerational learning through training in farming communities.
